My Musical Culture

My Musical Culture

Hi everyone!  I'm Sydney and I'm a music therapy major with my focus instrument being oboe.  I've played oboe for about 8 years now and I've wanted to do music therapy for about 5.  I've always had a passion for music and an interest in the emotions that music provokes.  I love how music can immediately and effortlessly change your entire mood and the entire surrounding vibe.

1. Music that's important to me:

Dreams by Fleetwood Mac has become especially important to me over the past year.  I think this song holds a special place in my heart because I have listened to it so many times while going on adventures with my friends.  I have a lot of positive memories associated with this song and it's also just a genuinely good song with positive vibes.  Almost everyone knows this song and it's always a crowd favorite on car rides.  I've included a video of me and my puppy, Coda, dancing to it :)

Dreams, Fleetwood Mac

2. Music that's helped me get through the pandemic:

Music that helped me most in the pandemic has been the music on a collaborative playlist I have with some of my friends.  The playlist is shared between me and two of my friends and we all just put in songs that we know the others will like.  It's been a way for me to stay connected and feel close to my friends even though I couldn't see them.  One song on this playlist is "Vultures" by John Mayer and I would have to say it's the song that helped me through the pandemic the most.

 Vultures, John Mayer

3.  Music that I don't particularly like:

I tend to gravitate towards music that makes me feel good.  While I appreciate all music for what it has to offer, I just don't really vibe with music that has a hateful message or leaves me feeling angry.  I do respect the high energy of this song, it's just not my cup of tea.

Useless Sacrifice, Death Decline

  1. I can definitely connect and relate to what your story is relating to music that is important to you. My friends and I have songs that we listen together that are always crowdpleasers and songs that never disappoint when we go out. Sometimes it seems as if we always find ourselves listening to a couple of the same songs every time we go out!

  3. I love how you like to keep a positive message in the music you listen to! I agree that the death metal is kinda scary sometimes. It just seems to go against all of the beautiful qualities that most music harnesses. I love the song "Dreams". It seems really calming and tranquil. Love your post!

  4. I really like the music that you chose Sydney! The song by Fleetwood Mac has really good vibes, and I like how in a lot of your music descriptions you connect music to your friends. I also love John Mayer, he has a really soothing voice, and the video you shared his guitar playing is really cool!
